Senega Root (Snake Root) 1 Oz. (Polygala tenuifolia)
Product Details
One ounce, cut and sifted.
Senega Root (Polygala Senega) also
known as Seneca Snakeroot, is a flowering herb native to North America. Its
name honors the Seneca people, a Native American tribe who traditionally used
it to treat snakebites. Historical records show Senega Root held a significant
place in indigenous medicine. Eastern tribes valued it for respiratory ailments
and even as an emetic (substance that induces vomiting). Early European
colonists adopted these uses, adding Senega Root to their own herbal remedies
for coughs, rheumatism, and gout.
Medicinally, Senega Root's primary use
lies in its expectorant properties. The root contains chemicals that irritate
the stomach and lungs, causing the body to produce more mucus. This helps
loosen phlegm and ease coughs, making it a historical favorite for bronchitis,
asthma, and other respiratory conditions. However, due to its harsh effects and
the availability of safer alternatives, Senega Root is rarely used in modern
medicine.
Senega Root has no known culinary
applications. Its harsh properties make it unsuitable for consumption. In fact,
ingesting large amounts can be toxic and lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
While the Senega Root has faded from
mainstream medicine, historical accounts mention its use in rituals for
protection and purification.
