Base/Carrier Oils
DragonMarsh carries only cold pressed and refined vegetable oils and ingredients. We do not distribute any product refined with chemicals or containing synthetic preservatives. The pressing of the products do not require heat which breaks down the chemical composites of the oil. In aromatherapy and herbal use they are called base or carrier oils and ingredients. Their main use is to dilute or spread the expensive essential oils further. The thickness of the oil will determine the type of product made.
Thin oils like Sesame, Grapeseed, Apricot Kernel are great for baby and perfume oils, aromatherapy burners or light skin moisturizers as their absorbed by the skin immediately and do not leave a greasy residue. Medium oils like Sweet Almond, Evening Primrose, Coconut, and Palm oils are used in hair conditioners and massage oils as they stay on the skin a bit longer to provide lubrication for massage. Coconut and Palm oils are semisolid but melt at body temperatures and so are included in the medium section. Heavy or semisolid oils like Shea Butter, Lanolin and Vegetable Glycerine are good for making heavy creams, salves, and ointments that stay on the skin surface a very long time to allow the herbs or oils incorporated into the mixture to be absorbed into the skin first. Think of lip salve or herbal skin rash cream or suntan/block cream.
All our base ingredients do not have preservatives, so store in cool, dark area or in the drawer of your refrigerator. Just remember to liquefy solids in warm water in a bowl -- do not bring to a boil in a pan. Small amounts of microwaves (10 seconds) are also useful. Don't forget to remove the cap or any metal labels!
