Pleurisy Root (Asclepias tuberosa), also known as butterfly weed
or, is a vibrant wildflower native to eastern and southwestern North America.
Historically, various indigenous tribes of North America used the plant
medicinally. The Chippewa believed it soothed coughs and colds, while the
Meskwaki people used it to treat pleurisy, a lung inflammation, which is how
the plant earned its common name. It's important to note that while
historically used medicinally, Pleurisy Root is considered toxic and should not
be ingested without professional guidance.
Pleurisy Root is not typically used culinarily. However, it is a
vital part of the lifecycle for Monarch butterflies. Monarch caterpillars are
the only insects that can consume the toxic milkweed sap without harm. In fact,
they must eat milkweed as larvae to develop the specific toxins that make them
unpalatable to predators as adults. By planting Butterfly weed in your garden,
you are directly contributing to the health of the Monarch butterfly
population.
Magically, Pleurisy Root has historically been associated with
protection and purification. Some practitioners believed burning the dried
roots could cleanse a space of negative energy, while others carried the root
as a charm to ward off evil.
