Lobelia (Lobelia inflata), AKA Indian tobacco or pukeweed, is a flowering plant native to eastern North America. Historically, Native Americans used Lobelia inflata in religious ceremonies and as a medicinal herb, smoking the dried leaves to treat asthma and coughs. In the 9th century, Lobelia inflata gained popularity among European and American physicians as a powerful emetic, or medication that induces vomiting. This use stemmed from the belief that many illnesses were caused by toxins in the body, and that vomiting could expel these toxins and promote healing. However, Lobelia inflata is highly toxic and can cause serious side effects, including paralysis and death, if ingested in high doses. Due to its safety concerns, Lobelia inflata is no longer used in conventional medicine.

Some people also use Lobelia inflata in herbal smoking blends, but It is important to note that Lobelia inflata is not a safe substitute for tobacco.
