Five Finger Grass (Potentilla erecta), also known as tormentil, Cinquefoil , erect cinquefoil, is a small flowering perennial with a long history of medicinal use. European and West Asian cultures have utilized Cinquefoil for centuries, with records dating back to the Middle Ages. Primarily, the root of the plant was used for its astringent properties, a natural remedy for diarrhea and dysentery. Its effectiveness stemmed from high levels of tannins, which caused tissues to contract and reduced inflammation. Tormentil also found use as a topical treatment for wounds and sores, due to its styptic properties that helped stop bleeding.
