Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) boasts a rich history that
transcends its cheerful presence in gardens. Once a common sight in European
wheat fields, its abundance earned it the name "cornflower."
Ironically, widespread herbicide use now threatens the wildflower in its native
habitat. Historically, cornflower petals were used as a natural dye, their
vibrant blue coloring textiles a vivid indigo.
Medicinally, cornflower has a long history of use in herbal
remedies. Traditional European healers used cornflower infusions for a variety
of ailments, including eye infections, fevers, and digestive issues. While
modern science hasn't fully validated these practices, some studies suggest
cornflower extracts may possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
Cornflower's bright blooms haven't escaped the realm of magic
either. In some European folk traditions, cornflower was associated with
protection against evil and misfortune. The bright blue flowers were sometimes
woven into amulets or placed beneath pillows to ward off nightmares and ensure
peaceful sleep.
