Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) is a starchy powder ( contains roughly 80%
starch ) and is derived from roots of tropical plants. Originally cultivated by
the Arawak people of South America, the name "arrowroot" comes from
the belief it could counteract poisoned arrows. European explorers in the 16th
century brought arrowroot to the Western world, where it became a valued food
source, particularly for infants and those with digestive issues.
Medicinally, arrowroot has traditionally been used to treat diarrhea, IBS, and other stomach ailments. The easily digestible nature of arrowroot starch makes it a suitable option for those recovering from illness or with sensitive digestive systems. Additionally, some studies suggest arrowroot may help lower cholesterol.
In the culinary world, arrowroot powder shines as a thickening agent. It has no taste and is often used as a thickening agent for sauces, fruit pie fillings and glazes, and puddings. Arrowroot mixtures thicken at a lower temperature than mixtures made with flour or cornstarch. Two teaspoons of Arrowroot can be substituted for 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. One teaspoon of Arrowroot can be substituted for 1 tablespoon of flour. It starts out opaque but clarifies upon cooking much like cornstarch. Arrowroot has been substituted for other thickeners when there are concerns about grain allergies. Arrowroot is also a great option for gluten-free baking and can be used to make crackers, cookies, and
other treats.
Finally, arrowroot holds a place in some spiritual traditions. In hoodoo, a folk magic practice with roots in African and European traditions, Arrowroot is sometimes associated with good fortune and is used in rituals for that purpose.
