Mullein (Verbascum thapus), displays a long history. Records of its use stretch back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was valued for its medicinal properties. Dioscorides, a Greek physician in the first century AD, mentioned its use for coughs and respiratory ailments. Its fuzzy leaves were even used as lamp wicks and fire tinder.

Medicinally, mullein has a range of traditional uses. The leaves and flowers, when dried and steeped as a tea, have been used to soothe coughs, congestion, and irritation of the respiratory tract. The leaves' emollient properties were also used topically to treat wounds and skin irritations.

Culinary uses for mullein are less common but do exist. The young leaves can be eaten raw in salads, although their fuzzy texture might not be for everyone. The leaves can also be cooked and used as a potherb like spinach. The dried flowers have even been used as a tea substitute.

Common mullein also holds a place in various magical traditions. it has been associated with protection and banishing negativity, courage, protection, health, love, exorcism, and divination The tall stalk was sometimes carried as a talisman, and the dried leaves were burned for purification rituals.
