Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellate), also known as prince's pine
or ground holly, is a small evergreen shrub native to North America and Asia.
Historically, various indigenous tribes used pipsissewa for a variety of
medicinal purposes. Decoctions made from the leaves were used to treat urinary
tract infections (UTIs), coughs, and stomachaches. Externally, poultices made
from the plant were applied to wounds and sores to aid healing.
While some historical uses of pipsissewa are supported by
contemporary herbalists, modern medicinal use of pipsissewa focusses on its
potential diuretic and antiseptic properties, though these claims are not
universally accepted within the medical community.
Pipsissewa leaves have a mildly sweet flavor and were once used
as a flavoring agent in candies and sodas. However, due to safety concerns,
this practice is no longer common. Consumption of large quantities of
pipsissewa can lead to nausea, vomiting, and other side effects.
Pipsissewa also holds significance in some traditions of folk
magic. It was associated with cleansing and protection and was sometimes used
