Goldenseal Leaf (Hydrastis canadensis), also known as goldenseal, is
native North America, where Native Americans used the golden-colored root for a
variety of purposes. Medicinally, it was brewed into teas to treat coughs,
upset stomach, and infections. Externally, it was applied to wounds and sore
eyes. Goldenseal's vibrant yellow color also held significance in some tribes,
being used in ceremonies and as a body paint.
The rise of Western herbalism in the 19th century brought Goldenseal
into the spotlight. Peddled as a cure-all for everything from hay fever to
cancer, it became a popular tincture and capsule ingredient. Modern science
hasn't quite borne out these claims, but some studies suggest goldenseal may
have benefits for specific conditions like diarrhea and upper respiratory
infections.
Goldenseal even found its way into some magical practices. Its
association with the color gold led to its use in attracting wealth and
prosperity. Some believed it offered protection from evil spirits and negative
