Sassafras leaves (Sassafras albidum), with their unique
mitten-shaped form or three-lobed appearance, come from the Sassafras tree
native to eastern North America. Indigenous peoples have a long history of
using sassafras for its various purposes. Sassafras root bark tea was
traditionally consumed as a remedy for coughs, colds, and digestive issues.
Additionally, sassafras leaves were brewed into a tea or used topically to
treat skin conditions.
Sassafras also has culinary traditions. The root was once a key ingredient in root beer, and the leaves are still used today in Cajun and Creole cooking, particularly in filé powder, a spice that thickens and adds a distinct flavor to gumbo. Sassafras leaves have a fragrant, sassafras-like
