Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis), also known as common valerian or garden heliotrope, notes usage back to ancient Greece and Rome. Texts from this era mention its use as a natural remedy for sleeplessness and anxiety. Even its name whispers of its medicinal properties, with "valere" translating to "to be well" in Latin.

Traditionally, the dried roots and rhizomes of Valeriana officinalis are used medicinally. it is most consumed in capsule or tincture form (due to its less than pleasant aroma & taste) to promote relaxation and ease insomnia. It can also alleviate symptoms of anxiety, though research is ongoing. It's important to note that while generally safe for short-term use, Valeriana officinalis can interact with certain medications and may cause side effects.

Valerian leaves were historically used as a flavoring agent in some parts of Europe. The strong-smelling roots, while not generally considered palatable by humans, have an interesting effect on cats. Much like catnip, valerian root can induce a playful and excitable state in felines.

Its association with relaxation and sleep has led to its use in rituals intended to promote peaceful dreams or prophetic visions. It's also been incorporated into spells for calmness and tranquility.
