Belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae), it thrives in wet environments like marshes, meadows, and stream banks. The plant reaches a height of 3 feet and boasts small, blue flowers that bloom from July to October.

Historically, Skullcap has been a prominent figure in traditional medicine. The Cherokee people used it as an emmenagogue, a substance that promotes menstrual flow.
