known as mountain arnica, was a flowering perennial herb native to mountainous
regions of Europe and Siberia but was brought over to the North American continent
by immigrants where it flourishes today. Traditionally, arnica has been used for
its medicinal properties. Folk remedies incorporated arnica into liniments and
salves used to treat strains, sprains, and bruises. Even today, some
professional athletes use topical arnica products to aid in muscle recovery
after exercise.
It is important to note that arnica is for external use only. Ingestion of arnica can lead to serious health complications, including gastrointestinal distress and cardiac problems. Arnica should never be taken
internally or applied to broken skin.
